The axle bearing is used as a pivot point for the pivot arms to swing back and forth on. The bearing offers trouble free movement for the pivot arms to operate without them getting bound up; number one cause of bearing failure is dirt and debris will get into them and absorb all the grease. Lubricity is key in getting the max life out of the bearings on your tarp system. No lubricity, and metal on metal contact will eventually cause a failure. 

The bearing is sold individually.
